Telford Expo 2015

This weekend I went to the Telford Expo with my housemates for the third year and as usual had an amazing time and spent maybe a bit to much money (just kidding, I restrained myself ). Telford Expo for those that don't know is a small Comic Con that takes place on the second Saturday of every February in the West Midlands of England.

The day didn't get off to the best start as I ended up on my arse at around 10:30 in the morning having fallen out of my housemates car and skinning my knee like a child. I also happened to clock my best friend in the face with my bag on the way out which resulted in the two of us in fits of giggles trying to ask whether the other was alright or not. Thankfully my bag didn't do too much damage and didn't mess up her cosplay of Spengler from Ghostbusters which you can see in the photo.

The drive to the convention went smoothly enough, despite my throbbing and bleeding knee (I only found out i'd made myself bleed after the con), we had each made a mixtape for our mini road trip which woke us all up and made sure we were in high spirits by the time we got to Telford. When we got to the convention centre I met up with two more of my friends Nicola (seen cosplaying the website Tumblr) and Jake (seen cosplaying Tiger from Tiger&Bunny).

I had a great time wondering round the convention centre admiring all of the amazing cosplays and all of the artwork, clothes and memorabilia on sale. Some of my favourite cosplays included the plethora of Star Wars related costumes including an amazing Chewbacca, many stormtroopers and a group of tiny Jawas. There were also a couple of amazing Rooster Teeth related cosplays such as the Neptune cosplay and the fem! Mad King Ryan, both of whom were very lovely about being approached for a photo.

Despite my Enderman costume impairing my vision quite drastically I managed to navigate the convention without further injury and I can't wait for my next expo. For any of you who are thinking of attending a convention but don't know where to start I would recommend a small one day expo like Telford before you jump into one of the large three day conventions like the one in London.

Aberystwyth

As i've previously said in my welcome post i'm currently a third year Zoology student at university, So for the last three years i've been living in the beautiful town of Aberystwyth on the coast of Wales. The promenade has been my favourite part of Aber since I first came for a visiting day before joining the university. Borth Bog

One of my modules this year is Wildlife Conservation and as part of it I went on a field trip to Cors Fochno or Borth Bog. Cors Fochno is a raised peat bog in the enormous Dyfi nature reserve located between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth . The field trip was to learn how various types of protection help to save special areas such as Borth bog which is one of only a few raised peat bog left in the UK, Cors Fochno is both a Biosphere reserve and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Bog life We arrived at the bog around 2 o'clock and despite the wind and the rain the trip was a really fun experience. The walk around the bog started near a field with a lovely, albeit wet and bedraggled, pony. How to survive Comic con

Over the past three years i've been to six Comic cons, i've been to one day cons and three day cons, fandom specific cons and general Comic cons and i've been in cosplay and out of cosplay and I believe that through my experiences I can confidently give advice to first time con goers about what to expect and what to take. 1. What to pack If you are planning on cosplaying (going in costume) to a convention you may be unwilling to break the look by taking a bag but i've learnt that its almost essential. Most convention centres do offer their own food and drink but i've found most of them to be extortionate so packing yourself a lunch and taking a bottle of water with you will save you a lot of money that you can then spend on more merch. It's also a good idea to have a large breakfast before going to the convention centre because you will be walking around for quite a few hours.
