Aberystwyth

As i've previously said in my welcome post i'm currently a third year Zoology student at university, So for the last three years i've been living in the beautiful town of Aberystwyth on the coast of Wales.

The promenade has been my favourite part of Aber since I first came for a visiting day before joining the university. No matter what the weather walking along the prom and listening to the waves is always calming and made me feel at home as soon as I moved.
I often go on late night or afternoon walks around the town thats mainly based along the prom, there's an established walk called 'kick the bar' which starts outside the old student dorms Alexandra Halls, in the shadow of Constitution hill. You start by kicking the fence for good luck and walk the length of the promenade till you reach the end of the pier at the other end.

Aberystwyth is a great community on both the student side and the general residence side. The population of Aber is mainly made of students and during the holidays the town becomes much quieter which is sometimes a nice change of pace. But during term time Aber remains a laid back seaside town during the day before becoming a lively hub full of societies and students at night. There are over 100 pubs in Aber and many more places to hang out, eat and drink during the day or night.

As someone who previously came from a small village Aberystwyth is the perfect size, not too big but still enough room and enough going on to stop me from being bored. The uni itself has played a big part in helping me through the potentially hard step of leaving home and beginning life on my own in a safe environment,
basically allowing me to play at being an adult before trying it for real.

This post may have sounded like me trying to sell Aberystwyth to you but it truly is a wonderful place that helped me through a bad place in my life after my terrible sixth form years. If you are thinking about university options I would highly recommend that you look at Aber if they have your subject choice.

Borth Bog

One of my modules this year is Wildlife Conservation and as part of it I went on a field trip to Cors Fochno or Borth Bog.  Cors Fochno is a raised peat bog in the enormous Dyfi nature reserve located between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth . The field trip   was to learn how various types of protection help to save special areas such as Borth bog which is one of only a few raised peat bog left in the UK, Cors Fochno is both a Biosphere reserve and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Bog life We arrived at the bog around 2 o'clock and despite the wind and the rain the trip was a really fun experience. The walk around the bog started near a field with a lovely, albeit wet and bedraggled, pony. Peat bogs re full of different types of moss that can only be found in the anoxic, and incredibly damp conditions the bog has to offer. There is also a wide range of other flowers and plants unique to Cors Fochno but as its still early spring many of them weren't in bl...

How to survive Comic con

Over the past three years i've been to six Comic cons, i've been to one day cons and three day cons, fandom specific cons and general Comic cons and i've been in cosplay and out of cosplay and I believe that through my experiences I can confidently give advice to first time con goers about what to expect and what to take. 1. What to pack If you are planning on cosplaying (going in costume) to a convention you may be unwilling to break the look by taking a bag but i've learnt that its almost essential.  Most convention centres do offer their own food and drink but i've found most of them to be extortionate so packing yourself a lunch and taking a bottle of water with you will save you a lot of money that you can then spend on more merch. It's also a good idea to have a large breakfast before going to the convention centre because you will be walking around for quite a few hours. The convention centre is going to be packed full of people and...
