How to survive Comic con

Over the past three years i've been to six Comic cons, i've been to one day cons and three day cons, fandom specific cons and general Comic cons and i've been in cosplay and out of cosplay and I believe that through my experiences I can confidently give advice to first time con goers about what to expect and what to take.

1. What to pack

If you are planning on cosplaying (going in costume) to a convention you may be unwilling to break the look by taking a bag but i've learnt that its almost essential.

Most convention centres do offer their own food and drink but i've found most of them to be extortionate so packing yourself a lunch and taking a bottle of water with you will save you a lot of money that you can then spend on more merch. It's also a good idea to have a large breakfast before going to the convention centre because you will be walking around for quite a few hours.

The convention centre is going to be packed full of people and even in the depths of winter its going to be hot, especially if you are in costume so its probably a good idea to bring some deodorant or body spray. Also for a three day convention it is probably a good idea to bring more than one costume or to consider going one day without a costume, if you want to wear the same costume more than once consider getting some linin spray and spraying it on your costume before putting it on, I use Disneys linin spray because it smells like marshmallows.

2. Be prepared

Before the con decide a budget and stick to it, it's very easy to spend a whole ton of money with all of the amazing stalls around. One of the best ways i've found to stick to budget is to take the amount I'm willing to spend out before hand and leave my card somewhere else. Taking money out before hand is useful as well as most convention cash machines charge for withdrawals and many of the stalls won't take card.

Make sure you fully charge your phone, camera, video camera etc before you go, you don't want to be half way through a convention see an awesome costume and then find out that you can't take a photo. It's also a good idea to take your DS if you have one as conventions are one of the best places to get street passes.

It's also a good idea to research who's going to be there and any talks that are going on, this way you can plan your day around those as you'll have plenty of time to peruse the stalls in between talks and signings.

3.  Be comfortable

Conventions are a lot of fun but it does involve a lot a walking around in a hot place full of people so the key to properly enjoying it is to make sure you remain comfortable. If your planning on wearing a costume, especially if it's a big or heavy one, it may be a good idea to try wearing your costume for a couple of hours a week or so before the con to make sure it doesn't rub anywhere. Wear comfortable shoes that don't chafe and take plasters with you just in case of blisters.

Most importantly remember to have fun :)

Aberystwyth

As i've previously said in my welcome post i'm currently a third year Zoology student at university, So for the last three years i've been living in the beautiful town of Aberystwyth on the coast of Wales.   The promenade has been my favourite part of Aber since I first came for a visiting day before joining the university. No matter what the weather walking along the prom and listening to the waves is always calming and made me feel at home as soon as I moved.   I often go on late night or afternoon walks around the town thats mainly based along the prom, there's an established walk called 'kick the bar' which starts outside the old student dorms Alexandra Halls, in the shadow of Constitution hill. You start by kicking the fence for good luck and walk the length of the promenade till you reach the end of the pier at the other end. Aberystwyth is a great community on both the student side and the general residence side. The population of Ab...

Borth Bog

One of my modules this year is Wildlife Conservation and as part of it I went on a field trip to Cors Fochno or Borth Bog.  Cors Fochno is a raised peat bog in the enormous Dyfi nature reserve located between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth . The field trip   was to learn how various types of protection help to save special areas such as Borth bog which is one of only a few raised peat bog left in the UK, Cors Fochno is both a Biosphere reserve and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Bog life We arrived at the bog around 2 o'clock and despite the wind and the rain the trip was a really fun experience. The walk around the bog started near a field with a lovely, albeit wet and bedraggled, pony. Peat bogs re full of different types of moss that can only be found in the anoxic, and incredibly damp conditions the bog has to offer. There is also a wide range of other flowers and plants unique to Cors Fochno but as its still early spring many of them weren't in bl...
